Hazel Cheung

Hong Kong based painter and tattoo artist, Hazel Cheung, has been delving her skills in ukio-e and Japanese aesthetics for several years. Since graduating from art school and fashion design program, Hazel has been developing her passion in traditional Japanese art and ukio-e though her tattooing years. Her work inspires from traditional elements of Japanese ukio-e and modern world, bringing together a beautiful visualisation of her vision of the floating world.

Her paintings explore consumerism through its homage to the Japanese woodblock print tradition of Ukiyo-e. Vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and stylized figures serve as silent observers of consumerism’s allure, echoing Ukiyo-e’s emphasis on capturing fleeting beauty and pleasure. Clad in ornate traditional attire, the figures exude material wealth and aesthetic indulgence. Her artworks seamlessly merge historical influences with modern themes, encouraging viewers to ponder the nuanced interplay between aesthetics and impermanence within the “floating world.”
